How Motorized Screens Keep This Texas Home Cool

This homeowner can now enjoy time outside without boiling in the afternoon sun.

Enjoying time outdoors can be a challenge when the sun is shining directly on your outdoor space. You might have a beautiful porch or a gorgeous yard, but it can be difficult to enjoy when the weather gets uncomfortably hot. Thankfully, motorized exterior products like motorized screens can offer smart solutions to these common outdoor problems.

That was certainly the case for one homeowner in Austin, Texas who wanted to enjoy outdoor living without burning in the sun. Luckily for this homeowner, Gotcha Covered Window Fashions was there to make sure they were covered and able to stay cool.

Below, Gotcha Covered of Williamson County shares the story of how this homeowner went from roasting in their backyard to enjoying time outdoors:

Here in Austin, Texas the west-facing sun in the summer is brutal! Our customer had a great outdoor space, but significant issues with heat gain and glare from the west-facing sun.

The customer likes to spend late afternoons riding his Peloton exercise bike or just lounging on the patio, but doesn't like to fry.  Motorization was really the only option for this homeowner due to the large shade sizes (16-18' wide) and it was such a wise investment.

There were 2 challenges to this install:

1. We had to install onto 1/4" thick red iron. That stuff is tough!
2. We had to add a 2x6 steel spacer blocking to the red iron to push the shade away from the brick on the fireplace.

Another unexpected challenge we faced - the customer left before we were able to set the limits and when we tried we discovered there was no power. The customer forgot to turn on the switch to the ceiling outlets.

So we used an extension cord, but the motors kept kicking off due to motor thermal protection circuitry. Then we realized it was due to the gauge of the wire in the extension cord. We switched to a larger cord (10g) and the problem was solved.

I am so glad the motors have that built in thermal protection!

The customer just loved the shades and the ease of use due to the motorization!

As a bonus, his indoor living area is much cooler in the late afternoon when the shades are down since there are no interior shades in the main living area. Now the homeowner can keep cool both indoors and outdoors!
