Despite the solitary image this might evoke, her energy is palpable, and her enthusiasm pours into every corner of her work. Kallie owns and operates the business Curtain Call, a name that accurately reflects a creative and expressive personality. However, Kallie’s career journey didn’t begin with shades and automation in mind. Her professional roots trace back to an entirely different hands-on industry: fashion design. “I always loved to sew as a little kid,” she remarks fondly. “So, I began training in fashion design in New York.” However, faced with mercurial personalities and constrained creativity, the industry left her disheartened. Unsure of what would come next, she stepped away from a path of design and creation, but her natural ability to connect with others is what drew her back in. “I started the business before it had a name,” she explains. “I was at home, having kids, and people began asking me, ‘Oh, can you make this for me? Can you make drapes? Can you make pillow cushions? Can you make shades?’” Through high-quality work and a growing network of praise, a soft furnishings business began. As her reputation for interior work grew, she was eventually asked about shades and motorization. While some might stop at this point, finding themselves in a new industry with no prior history, Kallie remained undeterred. She contacted a reputable distributor, immersed herself in technical work, and eventually chose the name Curtain Call, something to wrap her flourishing business around. Kallie didn’t have a showroom or even a home office at the time. She grew her business by word of mouth, making presentations in potential clients’ homes. But in 2007, she took the plunge into a local networking group for small businesses. “It was a big launch for me,” she recalls. “I’m in this group of 20 professionals, all in different businesses, and a network begins to form of us recommending each other, whether it’s account services or blinds. It was a mom-and-pop kind of thing.” Kallie spent her time networking, learning how to perfect her pitch and elevator speech, gaining valuable tips on running a business. The success of her efforts is evident in her history of work and the enduring quality of her products. In fact, 2024 was her best year on record. By diversifying her portfolio with both residential and commercial projects and leveraging trusted relationships for support, Kallie has built a resilient and thriving business. Her proactive approach to self-promotion is evident in how she confidently approaches businesses with new installations, ensuring her name is recognized in the community. Supported by a network of friends and colleagues who advocate for her work, Kallie takes pride not only in delivering new installations but also in her ability to repair and maintain existing systems, solidifying her reputation for excellence. Somfy appeared in Kallie’s life by client request. In 2011, a word-of-mouth client asked for motorization and specifically requested Somfy. Although she hadn’t worked with the technology before, Kallie wasn’t deterred. As Kallie reflects on her journey, she remains optimistic about the future. “This past year was my best year yet,” she shared.
