National Window Covering Safety Month: Why Motorized Treatments are a Safer Option

Did you know October is National Window Covering Safety Month?

This October, as the leaves change color and you pick up your first pumpkin spice latte, there’s something important you should know. October is National Window Covering Safety Month, when parents and caregivers are reminded of the dangers of corded window treatments.

The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) is urging parents and caregivers to go “Cordless For Kids” and to check their window coverings for exposed or dangling cords which can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and young children. WCSC and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommend that only cordless window coverings or window coverings with inaccessible cords be used in homes with young children.

According to the CPSC, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes, with infants and children accidentally becoming entangled in window cords.

Thankfully, most motorized window treatments are cord-free, allowing for a safe and convenient way to control your window coverings without worry. Motorization combines safety and technology, making it a great choice for a child’s bedroom or playroom.

Plus, motorized window treatments include a few added benefits for parents. For example, with the myLink™ app and Sonesse® ULTRA quiet motors, parents can close their shades from a smartphone without tip-toeing in and waking the baby. You can also open the shades with the press of a button if your child refuses to get out of bed in the morning. Putting your shades on a set schedule means never forgetting to close a window covering and always protecting your family’s privacy.

Below are some helpful guidelines for keeping your children and pets safe:

  • Install only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children.

  • Replace corded window blinds and shades with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords marked with the Best for Kids™ certification label.  The label enables you to easily identify products best suited for homes with young children.

  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window cords, preferably to another wall.

  • When window cords are present, ensure that all window cords are out of sight and reach by shortening or moving them up and away, so that they are inaccessible to young children.
